Brad Nielsen to Lead Pennsylvania American Water After Merger

Brad Nielsen will take the helm as president of Pennsylvania American Water upon the completion of the company's pending merger with Essential Utilities. Currently serving as president of Iowa American Water, Nielsen will oversee state operations while reporting directly to Justin Ladner, the incoming senior vice president of state operations.

Cheryl Norton, executive vice president and chief operating officer at American Water, highlighted Nielsen’s operational background and his success in managing high-performing teams as key drivers for his appointment. Since July 2024, Nielsen has led Iowa American Water, building on a career that spans two decades in operations and management, including 17 years at Aramark Uniform Services.

The leadership transition coincides with a massive consolidation effort between American Water and Essential Utilities, first announced in October 2025. Once the all-stock merger closes—expected by the end of the first quarter of 2027—the combined entity will serve approximately 4.7 million water and wastewater connections across the United States. The company will continue to operate under the American Water brand, headquartered in Camden, New Jersey, pending final regulatory approvals.
