Vermont’s Legendary JJ Hapgood General Store Hits the Market

A 1978 Bob Marley concert poster and a cameo in the 1987 film Baby Boom are just the beginning of the inventory at JJ Hapgood, a storied Peru, Vermont landmark. Owners Leslie and Michael French have placed the property on the market, seeking a successor to steward the venue’s unique cultural legacy.

The Frenches, who transformed the space into a hub for locals and music fans, are now fielding offers from prospective buyers. While the couple remains in active discussions with parties interested in expanding the venue's live music and event programming, no final sale agreement has been signed. This leaves a rare window for new entrepreneurs to step into a business already defined by its deep-rooted community identity.

Beyond its reputation as a general store and tavern, the property functions as a repository for rock history. The interior walls feature high-value memorabilia, including a CGC-graded 9.8 Creedence Clearwater Revival poster from the Fillmore Auditorium and a mint-condition 1978 David Bowie print. These artifacts, paired with the building's cinematic history, provide a foundation that is nearly impossible to replicate from scratch. The sale represents an opportunity to acquire a business that functions less like a commercial asset and more like a living piece of New England cultural heritage.
