Insurers Pivot to AI as Catastrophe Costs Hit Record Highs

With U.S. weather disasters now costing billions annually at double the historical rate, insurance executives are accelerating a shift toward artificial intelligence. At the inaugural Property Claims Leadership Forum in Half Moon Bay, industry leaders debated how geospatial intelligence can move firms from reactive pricing to proactive risk management.

The urgency stems from a volatile climate landscape where wildfire losses alone climb 12% annually. Despite the pressure, the industry remains in a transitional state. While roughly two-thirds of insurers plan to ramp up AI investment over the next two years, only one in ten property-and-casualty carriers has successfully moved these technologies from pilot programs into full production, according to recent industry reports.

Scaling Intelligence Through Geospatial Data

Eagleview’s latest research, authored by Patrick Gill and Jenna Kinsman, highlights how AI platforms like the newly unveiled Eagleview Horizon can bridge the information gap between policy issuance and loss events. During recent wildfires in Los Angeles, the firm demonstrated that AI-driven geospatial assessment could perform damage analysis in minutes that previously required weeks of manual effort. CEO Piers Dormeyer emphasized that the objective is not to replace human experts but to augment their capabilities, allowing adjusters to manage the scale and speed demanded by modern catastrophe events. As carriers face these mounting financial pressures, the consensus among attendees is that integrating AI into core workflows is no longer a strategic option but a competitive necessity.
