The initiative transforms untreated wood—previously used to transport lottery scratchcards—into birdhouses and toys. These items are manufactured by participants at Bethel’s Kracks Workshop and sold in the organization’s retail shops. The revenue generated directly supports workshop operations and vocational programs, offering a sustainable model that reduces landfill waste while fostering community development.
Andrew Jackson, VP of Corporate Responsibility at Scientific Games, described the project as a prime example of the company’s commitment to locally led initiatives that deliver measurable social impact. According to Dunja Vukotic-Finkler, Director of Instant Tickets & Service Operations, the partnership allows the company to repurpose operational waste into a resource that aids skills development. Jürgen Hoff, head of the Kracks Workshop, noted that these steady donations of quality materials are increasingly vital as traditional charitable contributions fluctuate. This recognition marks the company's third Communitas Award in two years, following previous honors for technology donations to schools and STEAM mentorship programs.
