LVMH Results Signal End of Luxury Supercycle

A 5% sales decline at Louis Vuitton and Dior has shattered hopes for a swift rebound in the luxury sector. With organic growth across the LVMH group stalling at just 1% in the third quarter, the Paris-based conglomerate faces a grim reality: the era of relentless, high-octane expansion is over.

LVMH Results Signal End of Luxury Supercycle

Revenue for the July-September period reached 18.50 billion euros, barely edging past last year’s figures. While this performance met consensus estimates, the underlying weakness in the flagship fashion division remains a major concern for investors. The sharp reversal from second-quarter growth highlights how quickly the appetite for high-end goods has soured, particularly in China, where demand has turned notably sluggish.

Broader macroeconomic headwinds continue to squeeze the middle class, leaving brands like LVMH vulnerable to a cooling global economy. Analysts at Bank of America and Berenberg argue that the luxury supercycle has officially concluded, with shares in the sector down more than 20% this year. While pockets of resilience exist—notably a 6% gain in watches and jewelry and an 8% rise in travel retail—the overall trend remains defensive. As Kering, Hermes, and Prada prepare to release their own figures, the pressure is mounting for these houses to prove they can survive a market defined by caution rather than excess.
