Chinese Documentaries Spotlight Cross-Cultural Ties in New York

In a New York screening room on August 26, fifty academics and film professionals gathered to examine two documentaries from Chengdu Plus. The films, focusing on the lives of retired U.S. Army major general Bernard Loeffke and philosopher Roger T. Ames, served as a catalyst for deeper discussions on Chinese-Western cultural exchange.

The 30-minute documentary on Bernard Loeffke utilizes archival footage and interviews to document the 92-year-old veteran’s decades-long engagement with Chinese society. The narrative traces his personal milestones, from mastering the Chinese language to his experiences with traditional medicine and skydiving, framing his life as a bridge between two distinct cultural spheres.

Complementing this, the 40-minute film on Roger T. Ames captures the academic’s ongoing contributions to comparative philosophy. Now 80, Ames is shown in his capacity as a Humanities Chair Professor at Peking University, where he continues his work translating classical texts for English-speaking audiences. By detailing his scholarly trajectory, the documentary highlights the persistent influence of his research within Western sinology and the broader international academic community.
