World Thrombosis Day Targets Gender-Specific Risks of Blood Clots

One in four deaths worldwide stems from conditions linked to thrombosis, a silent killer that remains frequently misunderstood. This year, the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis is centering its global awareness campaign on women, emphasizing how hormonal shifts, pregnancy, and medical transitions uniquely alter the risk of life-threatening clots.

The campaign highlights a critical medical reality: a woman’s vulnerability to blood clots fluctuates significantly throughout her life. During pregnancy and the postpartum period, the risk of developing a clot is roughly five times higher than at other times. Beyond reproductive health, hormonal medications, surgical interventions, and periods of limited mobility further complicate this profile. Experts urge women to proactively discuss these personal risk factors with healthcare providers to ensure early detection and prevention.

James Douketis, M.D., chair of the campaign, stresses that awareness is a continuous necessity rather than a single-day event. Because up to 60% of venous thromboembolism cases occur during or shortly after hospitalization, the organization is pushing for standardized risk assessments for every patient. By recognizing warning signs early, patients and caregivers can intervene before a condition escalates, potentially saving countless lives through informed, timely medical action.
