The Milford-based firm announced the launch of Waters AI Link, a software capability that incorporates the Model Context Protocol (MCP) into its waters_connect platform. By linking this system to AI models like Claude, researchers can orchestrate complex liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry workflows without requiring custom software engineering. This shift aims to resolve the current laboratory bottleneck where AI-generated hypotheses outpace the physical capacity of the bench.
Beyond software, Waters has joined Anthropic’s Model Hardware Standard (MHS) research program to enable autonomous instrument operation. This integration allows AI agents to control physical lab hardware, including robotic arms and liquid handlers, facilitating continuous, lab-in-the-loop cycles that operate overnight. As molecules transition from research environments to regulated quality control, the platform maintains a consistent audit trail, moving data seamlessly into the company’s Empower software. The AI Link capability is currently in early access, with a broad rollout scheduled for November.
