The chosen tree, an Engelmann spruce from Idaho’s Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, replaces a previously selected grand fir that succumbed to needlecast disease. This shift highlights the contingency planning maintained by the Architect of the Capitol and the U.S. Forest Service to ensure a healthy centerpiece for the West Lawn. The upcoming celebration serves as a final send-off, inviting families to sign a commemorative banner on the transport truck and participate in holiday-themed activities.
Beyond the tree itself, the event features an interactive Holiday Craft Center led by DIY expert Serena Appiah. This segment of the program brings Arrow Tool Group’s seasonal campaign to the local community, offering hands-on demonstrations for holiday décor and gift assembly. Attendees will also have access to U.S. Forest Service educational displays, with appearances by Smokey Bear, rounding out a two-hour program designed to bridge the gap between national forest conservation and regional holiday traditions.
