CenTrio Seattle Targets 60% Emission Cut with New Electric Boiler

A 25-megawatt electric boiler will soon anchor the decarbonization of Seattle’s Western Avenue steam plant, a project designed to slash annual greenhouse gas emissions by 42,000 tons. Supported by $4 million in Climate Commitment Act grants, the initiative marks a major shift toward district-scale energy sustainability.

The installation plans involve a partnership between CenTrio, engineering firm Affiliated Engineers, and Seattle City Light to manage the power requirements for the high-impact transition. Construction is slated for 2027, with the new infrastructure expected to reach full operational capacity two years thereafter. Once active, the system will generate roughly 85,000 pounds of low-carbon steam every hour, serving the 140 buildings currently connected to the network, including three major hospitals.

Washington State Representative Joe Fitzgibbon framed the move as a model for cost-effective environmental progress in high-density urban areas. By focusing on district-level retrofits rather than individual building upgrades, the project avoids the high capital costs and logistical disruptions typical of private building renovations. Ian Goepferd, Vice President and General Manager of CenTrio Seattle, noted that this strategy grants customers access to greener energy without the burden of extensive onsite construction. This addition continues the company's track record of deploying large-scale sustainable thermal solutions, such as its net-zero cooling system in Chicago and heat recovery infrastructure in Denver.
