The tech giant intends to issue $1.8 billion in dollar notes alongside 26 billion yuan—roughly $3.88 billion—in local currency debt. While the company stated the proceeds are earmarked for general corporate purposes, the timing aligns with a sector-wide rush to fund expansion as AI capabilities become the primary battleground for Chinese tech firms.
S&P Global Ratings projects that Tencent’s capital expenditures will balloon to over 200 billion yuan annually by 2026 and 2027. This spending trajectory represents a significant acceleration from the 87.5 billion yuan expected for 2025, reflecting the heavy cost of building out cloud computing and large-scale AI models. Following the announcement, Tencent shares dipped 1.5% to 419.00 Hong Kong dollars during early trading.
