Taiwan Backs Alaska LNG Project With $4.4 Billion Commitment

Taiwan has pledged up to $4.4 billion for the Alaska LNG project, securing a commitment to purchase 30% of the facility's output for two decades. The deal, announced during a campaign rally, marks a significant shift for the state-backed infrastructure project as it seeks to stabilize long-term energy supplies.

Taiwan Backs Alaska LNG Project With $4.4 Billion Commitment

State energy firm CPC Corp. plans to import 6 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually from the terminal starting in 2032. This move aligns with Taipei’s broader strategy to diversify its energy portfolio, aiming for U.S. imports to eventually account for one-third of its total gas consumption. The development follows a period of heightened interest from Asian buyers seeking alternatives to Qatari supplies, which have faced significant disruptions.

The $44-billion venture includes plans for an 800-mile pipeline connecting North Slope production centers to a south-central export terminal. While the project’s massive capital requirement initially triggered skepticism regarding its competitiveness against Gulf Coast alternatives, operator Glenfarne maintains that lower shipping costs provide a distinct advantage. According to the company, transit expenses for Alaskan gas are projected to be roughly 35% of those required for shipments originating from the Gulf Coast, potentially offsetting the high cost of initial construction.
