Zayed National Museum to Unveil 7,000-Year History of the Camel

When the Zayed National Museum marks its first anniversary this December, the institution will shift its focus from national identity to an ancient partnership. The inaugural temporary exhibition, Tracks Through Time, gathers rare archaeological findings and oral histories to trace the camel's evolution from a wild desert dweller to a cultural icon.

The exhibition offers the public its first glimpse of evidence regarding now-extinct wild camel species. Among the artifacts are Neolithic wild camel bones from Abu Dhabi's Baynunah site, dating back to 4,500 BCE, and Iron Age remains from Saruq Al Hadid that illustrate the early domestication of the species. These findings, secured through collaborations with the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, provide a scientific foundation for the animal's historical role in regional trade and societal development.

Dr. Peter Magee, Director of the museum, frames the collection as a deep dive into the unique bonds between humans and camels. Beyond the physical remains, the displays incorporate 3,000-year-old rock art from Fujairah and 19th-century literature. The narrative extends into the modern era, featuring UNESCO-recognized traditions like Taghrooda and Alheda'a alongside the prestige of contemporary camel racing and beauty competitions. The event serves as the centerpiece of the museum’s anniversary programming, complemented by specialized workshops and archival film footage that document the living heritage of the UAE.
