Zayed National Museum to Unveil 7,000-Year History of the Camel

From Neolithic wild camel bones discovered in Baynunah to the prestige of modern-day beauty competitions, the Zayed National Museum is set to launch its inaugural temporary exhibition, Tracks Through Time: The Camel in Society, Trade and Art, arriving this December to mark the institution’s first anniversary.

The exhibition offers a comprehensive look at the evolution of the camel's relationship with the Arabian Peninsula, tracing its journey from a wild species to a central pillar of Emirati culture. For the first time, the public will view Neolithic remains dating to 4,500 BCE alongside Bronze Age findings from Al Sufouh and Iron Age domesticated remains from the Saruq Al Hadid site. These artifacts provide a rare glimpse into the early domestication processes that defined regional trade and daily survival.

Dr. Peter Magee, Director of the Zayed National Museum, emphasizes that the collection relies on original research to bridge the gap between ancient archaeological evidence and contemporary heritage. Beyond physical specimens, the display incorporates 3,000-year-old rock art from Fujairah, 19th-century literature, and UNESCO-recognized oral traditions. Visitors will encounter immersive audiovisual archives, including recordings of Taghrooda and Alheda'a, alongside personal testimonies from modern camel herders. The exhibition serves as the centerpiece for the museum’s anniversary programming, supported by interactive workshops and specialized retail experiences.
