The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has granted three-star ratings to MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, recognizing their cardiac programs as national leaders. MedStar Washington Hospital Center secured the highest possible distinction across three specific categories: coronary artery bypass grafting, mitral valve repair and replacement, and multiprocedural composite measures. Simultaneously, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore achieved three-star status for its performance in bypass surgery and combined procedures.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons manages a national database containing over 10 million surgical records, representing more than 95% of adult cardiac surgeries performed domestically. This registry acts as a benchmark for clinical excellence, providing a transparent metric for patients navigating complex medical decisions.

Dr. Thomas MacGillivray, physician executive director of cardiac surgery at MedStar Health and a former president of the society, emphasized that the ratings validate the surgical teams' daily precision. By maintaining these standards, the hospitals solidify their position within a system that requires rigorous adherence to outcomes-based care.
