Escort Radar Marks 50 Years of Automotive Detection Technology

Born in 1976 from a prototype hidden inside a repurposed Kodak Brownie camera, Escort Radar is celebrating five decades of industry influence. The brand, which transformed from a niche experiment into a premium automotive staple, plans to commemorate its legacy at the upcoming SEMA 2026 show in Las Vegas.

The company’s origins trace back to Cincinnati Microwave, Inc., where two engineers sought to challenge emerging speed enforcement technology. This spirit of defiance against industry norms defined the brand’s early years and remains its core identity. Jonas Forsberg, CEO of parent company Cedar Electronics, credits this enduring engineering mindset for the firm's longevity, noting that the focus on driver-first awareness has persisted even as the underlying hardware shifted from analog prototypes to modern, connected digital systems.

As the automotive landscape changes, Escort continues to lean on its performance-driven roots. The current product lineup, including the Redline and MAX series, utilizes continuous firmware updates to maintain relevance in a market that demands real-time data. At SEMA, held November 3–6, the company will display its evolution from the original radar detector to current road-awareness platforms. By framing its history as a foundation for future development, the brand maintains its commitment to providing drivers with the tools to anticipate road conditions while navigating an increasingly automated driving environment.
