The initiative focused on producing 'Bowls of Hope'—pre-portioned kits containing all necessary ingredients for chicken tortilla soup. By leveraging a bulk-purchasing agreement between the Emergency Food Network and Costco, the credit union maximized its philanthropic budget to ensure the kits reached those facing the strain of increased grocery, housing, and utility costs.
Jennifer Reed, Vice President of Public Relations at Sound Credit Union, noted that the event reflects a shift in how the organization approaches community support, moving from simple sponsorships to hands-on labor. For the Emergency Food Network, the contribution arrives at a critical juncture. According to Deputy Director Lianna Olds, the network now manages over 350,000 visits per month, as local families struggle to keep pace with the cost of living. The organization has set an ambitious target to distribute 20 million pounds of food throughout 2026 to meet this surging demand.
