Gold outlook hinges on Treasury revaluation as rate pressures peak

With U.S. 10-year Treasury yields pushing toward 5.30%, gold has shown surprising resilience against traditional market correlations. Peter Kinsella, head of investment services at UBP, suggests that the worst of the yield-driven sell-off is likely behind the metal, with potential for a sharp reversal fueled by Treasury policy.

Gold outlook hinges on Treasury revaluation as rate pressures peak

While gold prices recently retreated following a hotter-than-expected CPI report, dropping 1.96% to $4,079.42 per ounce, the structural response to rising real interest rates remains muted. Investors have largely ignored the standard inverse relationship between bullion and yields, with both retail ETF positions and institutional futures holdings showing sustained growth throughout the summer. Kinsella notes that the current rate-hike environment is likely priced in, suggesting limited downside risk from current levels.

Central bank demand continues to provide a secondary floor for the market. Although rising prices have tempered the pace of accumulation, World Gold Council data indicates that 45% of central banks still intend to increase their holdings in the coming year. Beyond monetary policy, the most significant catalyst for the metal may come from the U.S. Treasury itself. A potential revaluation of the Treasury’s 8,000-ton gold stockpile would implicitly devalue the dollar, likely reigniting the 'debasement trade' that defined market dynamics in 2025. Once geopolitical volatility in the Middle East subsides and Federal Reserve rate hike expectations cool, this policy shift could serve as a primary tailwind for bullion before the end of the year.
