Akhmetov Foundation Backs Ukrainian Oscar Hopeful Traces

Six women recount their survival of sexual violence and torture in Traces, a Ukrainian-Polish documentary now vying for an Academy Award. To bolster its campaign, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation has committed a US$200,000 grant, marking the first time a Ukrainian charitable organization has financially backed a national Oscar entry.

Directed by Alisa Kovalenko and co-directed by Marysia Nikitiuk, the film serves as a visceral extension of the Foundation’s Museum of Civilian Voices, which has archived over 145,000 individual testimonies of the ongoing war. The grant aims to increase the documentary’s visibility among members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, ensuring these accounts reach a global stage. The film’s selection for the 99th Academy Awards follows a successful festival run that included winning the Panorama Audience Award at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival, as well as recognition at Movies That Matter and Millennium Docs Against Gravity. By bridging humanitarian documentation with cinematic advocacy, the partnership seeks to transform private trauma into a matter of international public record.
