SimBioSys Wins FDA Nod for AI-Driven Breast Cancer Risk Tool

The FDA has granted 510(k) clearance to TumorSight Risk, an AI-powered platform that predicts recurrence for early-stage breast cancer patients. By analyzing routine MRI and pathology data, the tool provides oncologists with individualized five- and ten-year risk scores before surgery, potentially streamlining treatment planning for millions of women.

The Chicago-based company SimBioSys developed the software to assist in treating hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative Stage I–IIIA breast cancer, a subtype accounting for roughly 75 percent of cases in the United States. Unlike traditional genomic assays that require tissue shipment and extended wait times, TumorSight Risk integrates into existing clinical workflows by utilizing spatial AI to assess tumor characteristics and surrounding tissue context already captured during standard diagnostic imaging.

Validation of the technology relied on a multi-institutional study of 2,129 patients across Mayo Clinic, Emory University, Stanford Medicine, and Mercy Medical Cedar Rapids. Clinical data presented at the 2026 ASCO Annual Meeting showed that high-risk classifications correlated with a 3.3-fold increase in recurrence compared to low-risk groups. According to Dr. Matthew Goetz of the Mayo Clinic, the platform offers a practical way to refine risk assessment, providing prognostic insights that remain statistically significant even when adjusted for standard clinicopathologic factors like tumor grade and nodal stage.

SimBioSys CEO Stacey Stevens noted that the tool aims to improve access to prognostic intelligence, helping clinicians navigate complex decisions regarding chemotherapy and long-term endocrine therapy. By shifting from surgical visualization to predictive analytics, the platform seeks to provide a more comprehensive, patient-specific view of cancer progression without requiring additional biopsies or specialized hardware.
