A Father’s Attempt to Decode the November Ballot

Faced with dense legal jargon and opaque campaign messaging, Huntington Beach resident Keith Harris launched Ballot Beacon, a nonpartisan platform designed to translate complex ballot measures into plain English. With the November 3 election drawing near, the project aims to provide voters with objective clarity on the consequences of their choices.

Harris, a father frustrated by the difficulty of deciphering local and state initiatives, built the site to strip away political spin. The platform identifies the practical outcomes of a "yes" or "no" vote, tracks campaign funding, and summarizes the arguments from both supporters and opponents. By offering a clearer look at the mechanics behind each measure, the service seeks to bridge the gap between technical legislative language and the public interest.

While basic information remains free to the public, the site also offers a premium tier, Ballot Beacon Complete VIP, featuring deeper dives into donor data and additional voter tools. Harris maintains that the initiative is not intended to influence outcomes or provide endorsements. Instead, he argues that the democratic process suffers when citizens cannot parse the text of the issues they are tasked to decide. The project focuses on the premise that informed decision-making requires a baseline of shared, neutral facts, rather than the curated messaging often found in political advertisements.
