Destinations International updates language guides to bridge industry gap

To mark Dictionary Day, Destinations International has released its 2026 Tourism and Social Impact Lexicons, providing a research-backed framework for organizations to explain their community value. The initiative aims to shift the industry away from insular jargon toward language that resonates with residents, elected officials, and local business leaders.

The organization argues that while statistical data on visitor spending and tax revenue remains critical, these figures often fail to connect with public priorities without the right narrative. By translating industry metrics into terms that emphasize quality of life and local opportunity, destination boards can foster stronger ties with the communities they represent. Don Welsh, president and CEO of Destinations International, noted that the industry's role has expanded significantly, yet the vocabulary used to describe that work has often remained stagnant.

From Industry Terminology to Community Engagement

Developed with support from the Destinations International Foundation, the guides are available in editions tailored for the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. Sophia Hyder Hock, chief impact officer at the association, emphasized that even the most compelling data loses its potency if it is trapped behind industry-specific terminology. These lexicons serve as practical toolkits for media relations, strategic planning, and public advocacy, encouraging leaders to prioritize simplicity and shared values over professional shorthand. The organization maintains that consistent, accessible communication is a prerequisite for building the public trust required to sustain tourism development.
