Minesto hits 48-hour service turnaround for Dragon 4 tidal systems

A 48-hour window to pull, service, and redeploy a tidal power plant marks a new efficiency milestone for Gothenburg-based Minesto. By completing this cycle in the Faroe Islands, the company proves its modular Dragon 4 technology can bypass the need for massive, expensive marine infrastructure during routine maintenance.

The intervention in Vestmannasund involved recovering the plant, extracting the nacelle to inspect an upgraded generator, and conducting functional checks before redeployment. By scheduling this work during a low-production tidal period, Minesto effectively neutralized the impact on total energy output. CEO Martin Edlund noted that this speed eliminates reliance on specialized port facilities, a critical hurdle for deploying tidal energy in remote coastal regions.

Unlike traditional offshore systems that demand heavy-lift vessels and prolonged downtime, the Dragon technology relies on swapping out subsystems on-site. This modular approach allows for comprehensive maintenance to occur onshore while the core installation remains functional. CTO Bernt Erik Westre credits the efficiency to long-term collaboration with local contractor SJH Offshore, which has allowed the team to refine their recovery and launch procedures through years of repeated ocean deployments. As Minesto scales toward multi-unit commercial arrays, this ability to minimize downtime serves as a central pillar for lowering the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE).
