While the Dow gained 1.08%, the S&P 500 rose 0.33% to 7744.11 and the Nasdaq Composite edged up 0.08% to 26713.03. The day was defined by a flight to safety, with the 10-year Treasury yield dropping 0.102 percentage point to 5.086%. Gold futures climbed 1.5% to $4147.70, and oil prices jumped 3% to $97.97 per barrel following an unexpected 8.6 million barrel withdrawal from U.S. crude inventories.
Technology stocks remained under pressure following a brutal session in Asia, where South Korea’s Kospi index plunged 7.6%. In the U.S., the PHLX Semiconductor Sector index fell 0.9%, while Dell Technologies shares retreated 6.8%. Conversely, CoreWeave shares rose 5.9% to $69.69, as analysts at Deutsche Bank signaled that concerns over the firm’s credit quality might be overstated given its long-term contract structure.
Financial sector earnings provided a counterweight to tech volatility. Bank of New York Mellon gained 3.6% following strong third-quarter results, and PNC Financial reported revenue growth tied to regional expansion. Meanwhile, corporate dealmaking continued: AstraZeneca announced a $1.5 billion AI-focused partnership with Insitro, and Penske Automotive Group agreed to a $4 billion buyout from its largest shareholders.
