Treasury Yields Retreat Amid Shifting Market Expectations

Oil prices slumped in Asian trade Monday, dragging U.S. Treasury yields down from recent multidecade peaks. While September inflation data exceeded forecasts, investor focus is pivoting toward the broader economic drag of elevated borrowing costs and the long-term viability of debt-fueled artificial intelligence spending.

Treasury Yields Retreat Amid Shifting Market Expectations

The two-year Treasury yield dropped 1.5 basis points to 4.720%, while the 10-year benchmark fell 3.1 basis points to 5.065%, per Tradeweb data. Beyond the energy-driven selloff, the decline suggests markets are pricing in a potential reduction in long-dated debt issuance when the Treasury unveils its quarterly refunding strategy on November 4.

Danske Bank analyst Jens Naervig Pedersen noted that primary dealers have already received surveys regarding issuance plans, fueling speculation of a supply-side pivot. Despite this temporary relief in bond markets, inflationary pressures remain a persistent hurdle. Mark Dowding of RBC BlueBay Asset Management projects inflation will hit a 4% peak early next year, outpacing the 3.7% headline figure recorded in September.

Barclays strategists have revised their Federal Reserve outlook, now anticipating rate hikes in both December and January followed by an extended plateau. This shift contrasts with earlier projections of a more immediate hold. Currently, money markets assign an 87% probability to the Fed maintaining steady rates at the upcoming October 28 meeting, according to LSEG data.
