U.K. Labor Market Tightens as Wage Growth and Unemployment Data Shift

Unexpected drops in unemployment to 4.7% and a rise in annual wage growth to 3.7% have signaled a strengthening labor market, forcing investors to price in a Bank of England interest rate hike for next month despite persistent concerns over energy-driven inflation.

U.K. Labor Market Tightens as Wage Growth and Unemployment Data Shift

The Office for National Statistics reported that earnings, excluding bonuses, climbed to 3.7% for the three months through August, outpacing the 3.6% forecast by economists. This tightening, combined with the lowest jobless rate since July of last year, suggests the economy possesses greater resilience than central bank policymakers previously anticipated. While Governor Andrew Bailey has characterized potential inflationary spillover as subdued, the data complicates the path forward for monetary policy.

Market expectations now lean toward the Bank of England moving the key rate to 4.0% in November. Suren Thiru, an economist at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, noted that these figures likely finalize the case for a rate increase, as the current labor conditions appear insufficient to curb inflation. However, underlying weakness persists; vacancy numbers saw their sharpest decline of the year, and smaller firms remain hesitant to recruit amidst elevated employment costs. Though AI-related investment has driven economic growth this year, the resulting hiring demand remains uneven, leaving analysts like Ashley Webb at Capital Economics to suggest that any broader inflationary pressure will likely remain contained.
