Equifax Shares Rally on AI Efficiency Gains Despite Mortgage Slump

Equifax shares surged nearly 12% to $177.18 on Tuesday after the credit bureau boosted its annual profit margin outlook. While persistent high mortgage rates forced the company to temper its revenue expectations, aggressive deployment of artificial intelligence and a influx of government contracts provided a critical buffer against the housing market slowdown.

Equifax Shares Rally on AI Efficiency Gains Despite Mortgage Slump

Chief Executive Mark Begor highlighted the firm’s progress toward a $150 million productivity goal driven by AI automation, which is actively insulating margins from broader economic headwinds. The company also secured $550 million in government contracts year-to-date, providing a steady revenue stream as traditional mortgage-related business faces continued pressure. Despite these operational gains, the firm lowered its 2026 revenue guidance to a range of $6.65 billion to $6.68 billion, falling short of analyst expectations.

Chief Financial Officer John Gamble warned that U.S. home loan activity is expected to decline by a high-single-digit percentage in 2027, with the most significant impact hitting in the first eight months of the year. Investors appear to be looking past these cyclical hurdles, focusing instead on the company’s ability to improve profitability through technology. Net income for the third quarter rose to $211.7 million, or $1.79 a share, up from $160.2 million in the same period last year. Fourth-quarter revenue projections remain conservative at $1.61 billion to $1.64 billion, trailing current analyst forecasts.
