Tokyo Kisen Net Profit Slides Despite Revenue Growth

Tokyo Kisen Co. Ltd. reported a sharp decline in nine-month net profit to ¥503 million, despite a steady increase in revenue and a significant narrowing of its operating losses through the end of December.

Tokyo Kisen Net Profit Slides Despite Revenue Growth

Tokyo-based tugboat operator Tokyo Kisen Co. Ltd. saw its net profit retreat during the first three quarters of its fiscal year. For the nine-month period ending Dec. 31, net profit landed at ¥503 million, a sharp decline from the ¥2.18 billion reported during the same timeframe the previous year.

Narrowing Operating Losses

Despite the bottom-line contraction, the company's top-line performance remained resilient. Total revenue climbed to ¥9.97 billion, up from ¥9.14 billion in the prior year. Tokyo Kisen also managed to significantly reduce its operating deficit, reporting a loss of ¥24 million compared to a ¥178 million loss a year ago.

The financial results, which follow Japanese accounting standards, reflect a period of stabilizing operations despite lower overall earnings:

    • Pretax profit reached ¥212 million, up from ¥56 million.
    • Earnings per share fell to ¥50.56 from ¥219.21.
    • Revenue increased by approximately 9% year-over-year.
While pretax figures showed improvement, the year-over-year drop in net income highlights a normalization of earnings following a significantly more profitable prior period. The company did not immediately provide specific guidance on the factors influencing the net profit variance.
