US and China Vie for Economic Clout in Central Asia

Samarkand transformed into a high-stakes diplomatic arena this week as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived with a 300-strong business delegation. The visit, aimed at closing a $12 billion gap in regional influence, occurred just hours after Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang met with leadership to solidify Beijing’s dominance.

US and China Vie for Economic Clout in Central Asia

The US push resulted in 54 new agreements spanning energy, transport, and critical mineral extraction. During the forum, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev hosted executives from firms like Wabtec and Franklin Templeton, signaling a shift toward integrating Uzbek companies into global capital markets. While these deals represent the most significant American economic outreach since President Trump’s January inauguration, they remain modest compared to the existing landscape. China currently maintains a $60 billion project portfolio in the region, with bilateral trade figures dwarfing the $1.7 billion exchange between Washington and Tashkent.

Rubio sought to frame the American presence as a pursuit of fair competition rather than an ultimatum. This tone marks a departure from earlier State Department rhetoric that attempted to force regional leaders to choose between American and Chinese AI development—a demand Central Asian officials previously rejected. By emphasizing that the US seeks access rather than exclusivity, Rubio attempted to navigate a complex geopolitical environment where Beijing’s geographic proximity and established industrial footprint continue to hold the advantage.
