Norway’s Gas Output Slumps as Winter Heating Season Approaches

Norway’s natural gas production fell 12.6% in September, a sharp monthly decline that hit just as the European continent prepares for the winter heating season. The Norwegian Offshore Directorate reported that total petroleum output dropped to 3.77 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, missing official forecasts by 4%.

Norway’s Gas Output Slumps as Winter Heating Season Approaches

The September slide was largely driven by a 43.2 million cubic meter daily drop in gas production, bringing output to 298.4 million cubic meters per day. Much of this volatility is tied to the final stages of the annual offshore maintenance season. Pipeline operator Gassco had signaled that maintenance would cut export capacity by roughly 20% through the end of September, though the directorate noted that other operational factors, including an extended outage at the Shell-operated Ormen Lange field, also contributed to the supply contraction.

Despite the monthly setback, the broader trend remains resilient. Cumulative production for the first nine months of 2026 is tracking 2.9% higher than the same period in 2025. With major maintenance programs finalized as of October 1, the infrastructure is now expected to handle the increased winter demand. However, the reliance on Norwegian gas—which currently provides roughly 30% of EU and British supply—highlights the sensitivity of European energy security to even brief disruptions in the North Sea. Moving forward, the industry faces the challenge of offsetting natural reservoir depletion in mature fields to maintain this critical export volume.
