The strategic shift allows Citi Mexico to mirror the corporate-focused model currently deployed in markets like Brazil, where transaction services and investment banking drive growth. While the firm retained its existing corporate clients during the split, the current objective is to deepen those relationships and capture new business from competitors. Brossier noted that previously, the ownership of Banamex limited Citi’s ability to aggressively court other banks, but that friction has now dissolved.
Evidence of this evolution is already emerging in the market. Citi recently led the first high-risk debt issuance for Banamex as it prepares for an independent 2027 IPO. Furthermore, the bank has secured bond issuance mandates for BBVA in Mexico, a move Brossier highlighted as improbable under the previous ownership structure. Beyond serving other lenders, the firm plans to scale its commercial banking segment to nurture mid-sized companies, aiming to eventually transition them into larger institutional clients.
