Commercial inventories excluding the Strategic Petroleum Reserve have shed more than 56 million barrels over the last 27 weeks. Despite this aggressive drawdown, total supply remains only 5 million barrels below year-start levels, bolstered by ongoing releases from the SPR. For the week ending October 16, 300,000 barrels were tapped from the reserve, leaving it at 282.7 million barrels—dangerously close to the operational minimum threshold of 250 million where extraction efficiency begins to falter.
Domestic production figures reflect a slight cooling, slipping to 13.679 million barrels per day compared to 13.979 million the prior week. Market reactions were muted on Wednesday afternoon: Brent crude traded down 0.54% at $108.96, while WTI fell 2.63% to $101.79. Meanwhile, refined products saw notable declines as gasoline inventories fell by 2 million barrels and distillates dropped by 2.6 million, further distancing those stocks from their five-year averages. Conversely, the delivery hub at Cushing bucked the trend, recording a 900,000-barrel gain.
