Emirates NBD Profit Dips as War Disruptions Weigh on Regional Trade

With the conflict between Iran and the U.S. entering its eighth month, Dubai’s largest lender, Emirates NBD, reported a 1.5% drop in third-quarter profit. While the bank managed to grow its operating income by 13%, surging expenses and cooling logistics activity across the Persian Gulf have begun to erode margins.

Emirates NBD Profit Dips as War Disruptions Weigh on Regional Trade

The bank posted a net profit of 6.33 billion dirhams ($1.72 billion) for the three months ending in September. This marginal decline reflects a broader struggle for regional financial institutions as shipping lanes and trade routes remain volatile. Although domestic demand within the U.A.E. continues to benefit from steady population growth and aggressive credit expansion, sectors like tourism and trade are feeling the weight of the regional instability.

Operating expenses climbed to 4.91 billion dirhams, a 26% year-on-year increase that outpaced income growth. Despite these pressures, the bank’s lending appetite remains robust; gross loans surged by 27% to 833 billion dirhams, bolstered by the strategic acquisition of India's RBL Bank. The International Monetary Fund continues to monitor the region, warning that the pace of economic recovery remains tethered to the stabilization of energy production and critical maritime infrastructure. For now, Emirates NBD maintains a resilient balance sheet, with its nonperforming loan ratio improving to 2.0% from 2.4% at the end of last year.
