BlackRock’s Hambro: Gold Miners Are the Ultimate Leveraged Play

Gold remains a vital hedge against systemic fiscal instability as global governments struggle with ballooning deficits and currency devaluation, according to Evy Hambro, global head of thematic and sector investing at BlackRock. He argues that mining equities are currently reclaiming their role as a high-octane, leveraged vehicle for investors seeking exposure to the metal.

BlackRock’s Hambro: Gold Miners Are the Ultimate Leveraged Play

The current economic landscape is defined by unsustainable debt levels and a lack of credible fiscal consolidation from major governments. For investors, this creates a clear incentive to hold real assets that preserve purchasing power over the long term. While gold has historically functioned as insurance against financial turbulence, its importance in modern portfolios is being rediscovered as bond markets signal growing skepticism toward sovereign creditworthiness.

Beyond the physical metal, mining equities are once again delivering the performance multipliers historically associated with the sector. After a period where rising operational costs eroded margins, miners have successfully decoupled their expenses from the surging gold price, leading to significant margin expansion. While ETFs provide direct exposure to the commodity, Hambro suggests that equities act as a turbocharger for portfolios, offering the added benefits of dividends and corporate growth. However, he remains critical of recent capital allocation strategies, specifically large-scale share buybacks among major miners, which he views as a lack of disciplined process compared to the rigorous standards applied to long-term infrastructure investment.
