The closure of the Canadian studio, renowned for the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises, serves as the centerpiece of a broader effort to streamline EA’s action-adventure portfolio. By reducing the number of massive titles in development simultaneously, the company intends to concentrate its resources on high-growth categories. This strategic shift extends to the lifestyle portfolio, where development on one internal Sims project has been halted, and the team behind the skate franchise is being significantly downsized.
EA is redirecting its capital toward core shooters and sports titles, specifically targeting expansion in Asian markets where its footprint remains modest. Future iterations of Battlefield and new gameplay modes for Apex are central to this push, alongside two undisclosed sports projects currently in production. Company leadership cited the need to capture player attention in an increasingly crowded market as the primary driver for these consolidation efforts.
