Ofgem Secures European Gas Links to Bolster UK Winter Resilience

To buffer against potential supply crunches, Britain’s energy regulator has authorized a new agreement to preserve the nation’s gas import capacity from mainland Europe. The move ensures the Great Britain-Belgium interconnector remains a viable lifeline, maintaining essential flexibility for the UK gas grid during periods of peak winter demand.

Interconnector Limited will now formalize a deal with National Gas Transmission plc to reinforce these cross-border channels. While the UK primarily relies on Norwegian pipeline gas and global LNG shipments, these continental links serve as a critical strategic reserve. Recent years saw a decline in available import capacity, driven by shifting commercial incentives and technical constraints, prompting the regulator to intervene.

Glenn Bryn-Jacobsen, Director of Energy Systems and Resilience at National Gas, highlighted that the measure is intended to strengthen systemic resilience against rare but challenging supply scenarios. The regulator has launched a consultation running until November 20, 2026, to finalize the mechanisms for cost recovery. This regulatory shift coincides with the government’s recent greenlight for the long-delayed Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, which is expected to begin domestic production before the end of the month.
