The volatility stems from disrupted maritime routes that historically carried roughly 20% of global liquefied natural gas. With shipments from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates stalled, European and Asian importers are now locked in a bidding war for dwindling available cargoes. The resulting scarcity is forcing regional markets to pivot toward stored reserves earlier than typical seasonal patterns dictate.
Industry data from Gas Infrastructure Europe shows continental storage levels at 74.6% as of Sunday, having posted their first net withdrawal last Tuesday. Analysts at ANZ anticipate a supply shortfall reaching 11% by month-end, noting that current LNG import volumes remain consistently below levels recorded during the same period last year.
