Federal Reserve Holds Rates Steady as Gold Slips to $4,035

The Federal Open Market Committee voted 10-2 on Wednesday to maintain the federal funds rate at 3.75 to 4 percent. While the central bank signaled resilience in domestic spending and strong productivity, the decision to hold steady triggered a 0.60% decline in spot gold prices, which settled at $4,035.48 per ounce.

The Fed’s latest policy statement emphasized a dual mandate focus, noting that despite elevated geopolitical uncertainty, economic activity continues to expand at a strong pace. Officials highlighted that job gains remain consistent with workforce trends, keeping the unemployment rate stable. However, the committee stopped short of providing forward guidance regarding future adjustments, leaving market participants to parse the central bank’s commitment to returning inflation to its 2 percent target.

Internal dissent emerged during the proceedings, with FOMC members Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack casting the two opposing votes. Both officials favored a 25-basis-point increase, signaling a split over the urgency of tightening measures. The committee maintained that further data accumulation remains necessary to calibrate the appropriate policy stance for ensuring long-term price stability.
