Japan Airlines Profits Tumble as Costs Outpace Revenue Growth

Japan Airlines saw its net profit plummet to 39.07 billion yen for the six months ending September 30, a sharp contraction from the 67.65 billion yen reported during the same period last year. Despite a rise in top-line revenue, the carrier struggled to maintain its bottom-line momentum against rising operational pressures.

Japan Airlines Profits Tumble as Costs Outpace Revenue Growth

The airline's financial statement reveals a complex landscape for the first half of the fiscal year. While total revenue climbed to 1.10 trillion yen from 983.92 billion yen a year earlier, the gains were eclipsed by surging expenses. This imbalance significantly impacted profitability, with pretax profit falling to 63.37 billion yen, down from 102.79 billion yen in the previous year.

Earnings per share mirrored this downward trend, dropping to 79.91 yen from 150.11 yen. These figures, prepared under IFRS accounting standards, highlight a period where aggressive expansion in revenue failed to translate into shareholder value, reflecting the broader volatility currently facing the aviation sector.
