Trump Envoys Explore Resuming Russian Gas Transit Through Ukraine

Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff have reportedly engaged in private discussions with Moscow and Kyiv regarding the potential restoration of Russian natural gas flows to Europe. The proposal suggests utilizing U.S. intermediaries to facilitate the transit, an arrangement that would bypass current EU restrictions while potentially offering significant financial incentives to American investors.

Trump Envoys Explore Resuming Russian Gas Transit Through Ukraine

The initiative, floated during diplomatic visits this September, seeks to address the energy supply gap as winter demand surges. Since the expiration of the five-year agreement between Gazprom and Naftogaz early last year, Ukraine has blocked all Russian transit. Proponents of the plan argue that reopening the pipelines could provide Kyiv with essential revenue and stabilize heating costs for European consumers, who currently face depleted gas storage levels.

Germany remains particularly exposed, with storage facilities currently at 61% capacity compared to the 80% target established for November. Despite these pressures, European officials maintain that the mandate to phase out all Russian energy imports remains firm, with a full cessation of gas purchases slated for next year. While the EU officially rejects a return to Russian supply, the region continues to absorb roughly 85% of Yamal LNG’s global deliveries, highlighting the persistent gap between stated energy policy and market reality.
