US Manufacturing Surge Stalls Gold Momentum

A surprise jump in the US manufacturing sector has cooled gold’s early-week rally, as investors weigh stronger industrial output against persistent inflationary pressures. The Institute for Supply Management reported its Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index climbed to 55.5 in October, comfortably outpacing the 54.5 recorded in September and defying consensus expectations.

US Manufacturing Surge Stalls Gold Momentum

The uptick in manufacturing activity signals an economy running hotter than anticipated, directly impacting precious metal valuations. Susan Spence, chair of the ISM Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, noted that four of the index’s five key sub-components—including production and new orders—accelerated during the month. While employment growth saw a marginal decline of 0.3 percentage points, the broader expansionary trend reinforces the current economic narrative.

Gold had flirted with resistance levels near $4,000 an ounce earlier in the session, but the release of the ISM data triggered immediate selling pressure. Spot gold retreated to $3,955.60 an ounce, trimming its daily gains to 2%. For market participants, the data underscores the precarious balance between industrial growth and the Federal Reserve’s ongoing effort to contain inflation.
