Equinox Taps Anheuser-Busch Executive Brendan Whitworth as CEO

Brendan Whitworth is moving from the helm of beer giant Anheuser-Busch to lead luxury fitness brand Equinox. His appointment marks a significant shift for the company, as long-time leader Harvey Spevak steps away from day-to-day operations to transition into a new role as chairman of the board.

The leadership change arrives alongside a major financial infusion. Equinox confirmed on Monday the completion of a debt refinancing and a new equity capital raise, securing over $1 billion to bolster its global club footprint and enhance member experiences. Investors participating in this capital injection include Silver Lake, Ares, Sixth Street, and principals from Related Companies.

Whitworth takes over a business that has defined the upscale fitness market for decades under Spevak’s tenure, which began in 1999. By moving Spevak to the boardroom and installing a veteran executive from the consumer goods sector, the company aims to scale its influence in the luxury health and performance market. Greg Mondre and Stephen Evans of Silver Lake stated that the combination of new leadership and liquidity positions the company to aggressively pursue its global growth strategy.
