Paraguay Senate resumes impeachment proceedings against Peña

Paraguay’s Senate resumed impeachment proceedings against President Santiago Peña on Friday, a day after he submitted his resignation. The extraordinary session will consider his political future following the collapse of digital lender ueno, where Peña had former business links.

Lawmakers acting as prosecutors filed impeachment charges on Thursday evening. Peña is next due to defend himself and has requested a 72-hour extension to prepare his response.

The crisis began earlier this week when Paraguay’s central bank intervened in ueno, saying the fast-growing digital bank had failed to meet minimum solvency requirements. The fallout has prompted the central bank chief to leave office and led to arrest warrants for eight ueno executives, who later turned themselves in.
