ESA Taps NUVIEW for Lunar Mapping Mission

The European Space Agency has selected NUVIEW’s Moonraker project for a Phase A study, tasking the company with using space-based LiDAR to map the lunar surface. The mission aims to generate high-resolution, three-dimensional terrain models of the Moon’s polar regions, providing critical data for future robotic and crewed landing attempts.

Operating as the prime contractor for an international consortium, NUVIEW plans to deploy a LiDAR-equipped spacecraft to capture elevation data of priority areas, including permanently shadowed zones. These Digital Elevation Models will serve as a foundational resource for identifying safe landing sites and planning surface operations. Katie Graumann, CEO of NUVIEW Germany, noted that the mission adapts existing Earth-observation LiDAR architecture to meet the specific requirements of lunar orbit, effectively lowering risk for upcoming exploration efforts.

Leonardo DiCaprio, an investor in the firm, framed the initiative as a step toward more responsible expansion into space. He argued that high-resolution 3D mapping facilitates safer decision-making, drawing a parallel between the technological demands of lunar exploration and the necessity of environmental intelligence on Earth. The project aligns with the European Space Agency’s strategy to establish a long-term architecture for the lunar surface, marking a significant move for NUVIEW in its transition from Earth-based commercial mapping to deep-space utility.
