Scania delivers hybrid trucks to Swedish Armed Forces for field trials

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has taken delivery of the first of three hybrid trucks from Scania, initiating a joint project to test electrified heavy-duty transport in military environments. Unveiled at the Eurosatory exhibition in Paris, the vehicles aim to integrate silent mobility and mobile power generation into defense operations.

These plug-in parallel hybrid trucks allow for combustion and electric propulsion to operate independently or in tandem. The electric motor delivers instant torque and low-speed maneuverability, with an electric-only range between 70 and 80 kilometers. Beyond transport, the platform functions as a mobile power station, utilizing a 208 kWh battery system to support command posts, sensor arrays, and communication equipment.

By replacing traditional diesel generators with silent battery power, the Swedish Armed Forces hope to lower detection risks in sensitive operational areas. The vehicle can provide roughly four hours of continuous AC power, with the onboard combustion engine capable of recharging the battery in under an hour during stationary idle. Stefano Fedel, Head of Scania Commercial, noted that the initiative seeks to validate these technologies under real-world conditions while refining Scania’s modular production system for potential future defense contracts.
