CGI Federal debuts AI platform to overhaul aging government IT systems

Federal agencies struggling with decades of fragmented code and missing documentation have a new diagnostic tool. CGI Federal launched Yukon, an AI-powered digital workforce platform designed to map legacy environments, identify security vulnerabilities, and generate modernization roadmaps in hours rather than the weeks typically required by manual analysis.

The platform functions by ingesting legacy code to provide plain-language explanations and instant insights into integration points. Beyond mapping, the tool automates the creation of software bills of materials (SBOMs) and visualizes potential attack vectors, allowing teams to identify outdated libraries or hardcoded secrets before beginning updates. By creating a digital twin of existing infrastructure, the system helps agencies predict how changes will affect interconnected services, directly supporting audit-readiness and authority-to-operate processes.

Built on Amazon Web Services, Yukon offers flexible deployment options where agencies can either upload code for secure analysis or provide direct repository access. Victor Foulk, Vice-President of Emerging Technologies at CGI Federal, noted that the platform balances the need for rapid modernization with the requirement for mission stability. The company has already applied this technology to a mission-critical financial management system, producing a modernization-ready blueprint that accelerated onboarding and tightened security protocols for the client.
