Norway Taps ICEYE for Satellite-Based Nationwide Flood Monitoring

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate has commissioned satellite firm ICEYE to provide real-time flood monitoring across mainland Norway and Svalbard. The year-long contract aims to bolster emergency response and hazard mapping, utilizing synthetic aperture radar technology to bypass the country’s persistent cloud cover and seasonal darkness.

The project, which launched in February 2026, equips the directorate with two distinct surveillance layers: Flood Rapid Impact, which updates flood extents every six hours, and Flood Insights, which delivers deep-dive depth and impact analysis every 24 hours. This data will be shared across municipalities to refine hydraulic models and validate forecasting accuracy during snowmelt and storm events.

ICEYE’s constellation performs above its global average of 12 daily revisits over the region, providing a persistent view of evolving water threats. According to Torsten Starkloff, Flood Discipline Group Leader at NVE, the partnership will serve as a foundation for long-term hazard mapping. The contract includes a two-year extension option, reflecting Norway's commitment to integrating space-based intelligence into its national disaster preparedness strategy.
