Rotterdam Launches Fieldlab to Operationalize Quantum-Secure Networks

A consortium of industry leaders has launched the Quantum Communication Fieldlab Rotterdam (QCFR) to transition quantum-secure technologies from experimental pilots into active, real-world infrastructure. Located at RDM Next, the center focuses on hardening critical systems against future threats posed by advanced quantum computing.

The initiative marks a strategic shift toward protecting essential services—including banking, government data, and energy grids—from the "harvest now, decrypt later" risk. By providing a collaborative space for testing and validation, QCFR aims to solve the technical and operational hurdles currently preventing widespread adoption of quantum-secure protocols.

Building on the success of a 2024 port-based pilot and the QUEST project, which secured €1 million in funding for data center connectivity, the fieldlab connects a diverse group of stakeholders. Founding partners INSPIR8ION, Eurofiber, Q*Bird, Cisco, and CGI are working alongside regional authorities to ensure that new communication standards are not only resilient but also commercially viable for public and private infrastructure.
