University of Michigan Credit Union Overhauls Employee Benefits

Life does not pause for personal crises or the arrival of a new child, a reality prompting the University of Michigan Credit Union to launch a comprehensive paid leave package. The initiative aims to provide staff with financial security and necessary time away during major life events, replacing previous policies that often required employees to exhaust their own accrued time.

The Ann Arbor-based credit union is introducing 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave for births, adoptions, or foster placements. Employees facing significant, unexpected life events will now receive four weeks of crisis leave, while those caring for family members with serious health conditions are granted four weeks of paid caregiver leave. Additionally, the policy includes up to 20 days for bereavement and a new paid sabbatical program for long-term staff.

Chief Executive Officer Tiffany Ford stated that the shift is designed to remove the stress of financial uncertainty during times when employees need to focus on healing, grieving, or family milestones. Previously, workers needing extended time off had to rely on standard PTO banks or take unpaid leave. Chief Human Resources Officer Erica Botka noted that the organization aimed to rethink support structures to provide genuine security during critical life stages. The credit union, which manages $1.4 billion in assets, serves nearly 123,000 members across Southeast Michigan.
