Storm Damage Cripples Coal Handling Equipment at Virginia Terminal

Winds exceeding 80 miles per hour tore through a Newport News coal facility on Sunday, leaving a critical stacker reclaimer machine inoperable. The destruction at Dominion Terminal Associates, a site majority-owned by Alpha Metallurgical Resources, now threatens to disrupt the firm’s supply chain logistics across the region.

Storm Damage Cripples Coal Handling Equipment at Virginia Terminal

The damaged equipment served as one of only two machines tasked with moving coal into and out of stockpiles at the Virginia terminal. While the second machine remains fully operational, the loss of half the facility's primary handling capacity has prompted Alpha to issue force majeure notices to its affected customers. Company representatives are currently on-site assessing the structural integrity of the wreckage to determine a repair timeline.

Despite the setback, Alpha Metallurgical Resources maintains that it can mitigate the impact by rerouting shipments through other nearby terminal capacities. Management is currently drafting a recovery plan to stabilize operations while the damaged unit remains sidelined.
